…. from our friends.
So many times during my role in society I come across people who travel the face of this blue planet alone and leave alone with no one to herald their departure. When I get paged out at the small hours of the morning, traveling the highway to get to work I am usually the only car on the road. And I will inadvertantly pass solitary people walking. No one with them. I wonder if they realize how truly alone they look. In the dead of winter with the rain coming down sideways in the deep dark. Although we all have to walk our own roads, sometimes the road is less lonely and our day is a little brighter when someone walks beside us and revels in the small moments. Sometimes I think the most valuable thing in the world is that voice at the other end of the phone saying “Hey you! Haven’t seen you for awhile. Come on over!” Or a note in the inbox letting me know that there is someone out there who does know I exist.
I count myself lucky to know that I will not be one of those who is alone and unnoticed while true strangers stand aside asking the all emcompassing questions. I think it will still bother me until the end of my days when I come across those who have no one to be there when the curtain closes for the final time.
