On the road and online… maybe

when traveling, connectivity is something that is always on my mind.  Because I usually travel in Canada – I was amazed at what the difference is when traveling from Province to Province.  My main source of communication is my Iphone and so it depends on the 3g network.  Imagine my surprise while traveling through Saskatchewan and Manitoba I discovered I had no coverage on the 3G network anywhere outside of the major cities. In other words, for example in Manitoba I had no coverage outside the city of Winnipeg.   Luckily I had an older pay-as-you-go phone so I could use that in case of emergencies – but the Iphone, if I had to rely on it in case of an emergency situation would be useless.

With that in mind – for all you other intrepid travelers – here is the maps of all the 3G coverage areas in Canada by province/territory:

When looking at these maps you will notice a few things.

  1. Celluar coverage is mainly around the border between Canada and the US.
  2. The territories seem to be very poorly supported by cellular coverage.
  3. And Manitoba seems to fall far behind the rest of Canada in terms of networks available and cellular coverage.

So – when you are planning your tips – cell phone coverage is sometimes not as good as where you were coming from. Take precautions.
