One of my goals had been to try and attempt something called either an Iron Butt or a Saddle Sore during this trip. http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time – the problem being that ona 650, in order to do this kind of a ride would be a true grind. Unfortunately the accident blew my chances to qualify for the qualifications as the time delay disqualified me. Either way though, my goal was adjusted to see how long it would take me to get home. The Big Push was today – Tuesday. I had left Manitoba on the early Sunday morning, today was the goal of making it to Port Alberni by sunset.
We left revelstoke at 6:30am a little drier and hoping that that the rain would stay off until at least we got home. Heading out on the highway I was a bit apprehensive as I had heard the sound of fire trucks and ambulances. Prime indicator that there was a traffic accident. And I didn’t want to get stuck in any more traffic. We headed out and sure enough passed an accident but luckily here were no major delays. The one good thing about heading out early is that you can make time before the roads get clogge3d with tourist traffic. We took turns being in front and by hopping on to the “Coqu” (aka The Highway Thru Hell), made great time. We were able to board the 3:15pm ferry to Vancouver Island and despite a docking delay due to a faulty mechanism on the landing dock, we were off the ferry in good time.
Mother Nature wanted to make sure I knew who the real boss was though, and didn’t want me getting home without a reminder. On the parkway it started raining again with some lightening again – thankfully the lightening was in the distance and the rain was no comparison to what I had experienced on the Golden to Revelstoke hwy. I hit the highway, rolled on the throttle and rolled ito my driveway at 6:30pm. A good ride. and made it home without any major events. All in all a great trip!
