Day 8 – Russell, MB to Medicine Hat, AB

Sunday morning was the morning I had been dreading the whole trip. This is the morning that I set out from Russell, MB without my husband (the first time I had gone on a long trip without him ) and set up with Robin – aka threads.  We left Russel at 7:30am and took the Yellowhead to Yorkton.  From there we hopped on the #10 just outside of Yorkton and then slid onto the TransCanada at Regina.  That one stretch of road was the creepest I’ve ever seen as there were dead animals all the way.  the the funniest thing was walking into a service station and seeing a box of raccoon tails for $5 each.

Although we made a couple of stops, we pushed  through.  The plan was supposed to be to get to Swift Current.  Instead, we actually pushed through as much as we could until we got to Swift Current.  I was really surprised on my gas mileage as it was so bad from battling the headwind.  I can usually get around 240km on a tank before I hit reserve.  Because of the headwinds I had to switch to reserve at 150kms.

Although I know that the Prairies are a gorgeous place – riding the Trans Canada through Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta is so disappointing.  It’s like they picked the more boring scenery and plugged a road through it.

From Swift Current we pushed through and stayed in Medicine Hat this night.

The 650 is running well.  I can tell it’s working a bit harder than normal, but it’s a reliable bike and it’s performing wonderfully.
